As my crew will attest, we’ve been through a number of squalls, including a very long one with 50kts during a return cruise from the Atlantic. We got ahead of that one by going to bare poles as soon as we saw radar on our phone and the spinnaker did a funny little twist.
The conflict comes when you think you can adjust sails during the wind event because you don’t want to take a speed hit before. I’ve leaned to furl early because if you see it coming it will be on top of you before you can say furl!
