Sedina and Brano Eric, on Thalassa, will host this cruise to tranquil Baby Owl Cove. They will monitor VHF 16 and 22 from 11 am to 6 pm Saturday, if you have questions or need assistance. They are also available on cell phones: 571-344-1027, 703-509-4378. Please bring your favorite beverage and an appetizer to share. Our gracious hosts welcome you to join them for some great sailing, and a good time with friends, new and old, a glass of wine and delicious appetizers!
Baby Owl Cove is a pretty anchorage, which opens to starboard about 1/2 mile past green daymarker "1" at the entrance to Leadenham Creek, off Broad Creek, off the Choptank River.  Depths of 10 feet, with good holding, and protection from all but the south, but pretty calm even with winds from the south.
Leaving from Herring Bay, depending on wind direction, you can either sail toward and through Knapps Narrows, or SE toward Sharp's Island Light, rounding Black Walnut Point on the southern tip of Tilghman Island. Transiting Knapps Narrows provides a scenic glimpse of Eastern Shore life, but requires a shallow draft (less than 5 feet would be best) and preferably some local knowledge, as shoaling is a constant problem in the narrow channel. Contact your hosts or Paula Grenier, r/c Cruising, for more information on that route. Otherwise, once you have rounded Black Walnut Point, you will enter the Choptank River. A roughly NE course will bring you to the very broad (hence the name) mouth of Broad Creek (two miles across). From flashing green marker "1", which you should give a wide berth, pick up red "2" and follow the zig-zag channel up Broad Creek. Alternatively, a course of roughly 10 degrees from green "1"  takes you directly to red marker "4" off Deep Neck Point, being careful to stay west of the shoaling which extends out about midway between the two marks. Leadenham Creek lies west of red "4". Pass between daymarkers "1" and "2" at the entrance, and bear slightly to port to enter Leadenham. You will find Baby Owl Cove, and HHSA burgees (!) to starboard. See you there!
